Recently, the Egyptian army has restricted movement of goods and people through the tunnels, which are an essential lifeline for the 1.7m population of the coastal enclave under Israeli control. For a vast majority of Gazans, the tunnels remain the main passage in or out—including for weddings that would not occur if not for smuggling the bride through the tunnel after denial of permission from the Egyptian authorities.
